Foundation of the Institute of Theoretical Physics and Geophysics on the occasion of the reorganisation of geophysics studies at the Bergakademie. Based on the fact that the training of graduate geophysicists must also include lectures and exercises in theoretical physics, which was not previously represented at the Bergakademie in terms of chairs and institutes, it was considered appropriate to combine general geophysics with theoretical physics when the institute was founded.
01 October 1951
Appointment of Prof. Dr W. BUCHHEIM as Director of the newly founded Institute for Theoretical Physics and Geophysics
1953 Establishment of an underground station for tide measurements in Berggießhübel
1954Establishment of a permanent station for clinometric precision measurements in the Werra-Kali-Kombinat near Tiefenort at a depth of 290 metres
1963Establishment of a tidal station in Freiberg (Reiche Zeche)
February 1964Moving the institute from the rooms of the original Institute for Applied Geophysics in the main building of the Bergakademie to the new building of the "Geophysical Institutes" at Gustav-Zeuner-Straße 12.
1965Foundation of the research group of the Saxon Academy of Sciences in Leipzig (SAW) at the Chair of Theoretical Physics and Geophysics with a branch office in Bad Brambach
1968Construction of a Raman laser laboratory
1968In the course of the 3rd university reform, the I. and II. University reform, the I. and II. Physics Institute and the Institute of Theoretical Physics and Geophysics were merged to form the Physics Department.
1970Takeover of the underground laboratories in Berggießhübel and Tiefenort by the Central Institute for Physics of the Earth Potsdam (ZIPE) of the Academy of Sciences
1970Relocation of Science Department II (Applied Physics) and Science Department III (Theoretical Physics) to a wing of the former Moulding Institute at Bernhard-von-Cotta-Straße 4.
1972Institution of a lectureship for theoretical physics, which was filled by Jochen Monecke from the TU Dresden, with the aim of establishing solid state theory in Freiberg in the future.
31 August 1975Emerit of Prof. Dr phil. habil. W. Buchheim
1975At the request of Prof. Buchheim, J. Monecke takes over as head of the Institute of Theoretical Physics until his retirement in 2004
1977Appointment of Doz. Dr Jochen MONECKE to the Chair of Theoretical Physics. Work initially began with band structure calculations of ternary compound semiconductors, which were used to interpret optical measurements. In addition, work on strongly correlated electron systems was continued and investigations into the absorption and dispersion of seismic waves, Fermi resonance and the physical properties of solid solutions and macroscopic composites were started.
1978The Raman Laboratory becomes the Central Raman Laboratory of the Bergakademie under the direction of Dr Gert Irmer.
The Raman laser laboratory, which initially focussed on liquid investigations, was further expanded and later increasingly used for laser Raman spectroscopy on solids.
1985Dissolution of the working group of the Saxon Academy of Sciences in Leipzig
After 1990the Physics Section was renamed the Physics Department. The three scientific fields became corresponding institutes.
WS 1996/97Start of the new degree programme "Applied Natural Science" with 10 first-time enrolments
March 2001PD Dr. rer. nat. habil. Gert Irmer is appointed adjunct professor.
WS 2002/03Prof. Dr J. Monecke accepted the invitation of a visiting professorship at the Liaoning Technical University in Fuxin, China
2004Emerit of Prof. Dr J. Monecke
Prof. Dr Gert IRMER briefly takes over as head of the Institute of Theoretical Physics.
Summer 2005Moving the Institute of Theoretical Physics from Cotta-Str. 4 to the renovated Gellert Building, Leipziger Str. 23, which now unites all 3 physics institutes under one roof.
01.09.2005Appointment of Dr. rer. nat. habil. to the Professorship of Theoretical Physics and appointment as Institute Director
30.09.2009Prof. Dr Irmer retires.
01.10.2009Dr Himcinschi takes over the management of the Raman laboratory.
2011Installation of a computer pool in the Gellert Building with 13 workstations, funded by the "Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg" foundation. This has significantly improved the compulsory practical course on quantum theory for bachelor students of applied natural sciences.
