Musically accompanied by the string ensemble of the Collegium Musicum of the TU Bergakademie Freiberg, 45 students from 6 nations received a Deutschlandstipendium on 21 May. This provides them with financial support for one or two semesters. Following the ceremonial presentation of the Germany Scholarships, the scholarship holders and their sponsors were able to explore the Freiberg Silver Trail, which reflects the history of Freiberg in eleven sculptures.

The scholarship holders received their certificates at a ceremony and then had the opportunity to talk to the scholarship providers. "In addition to academic achievements, commitment and motivation outside of everyday student life are also decisive for being awarded a Deutschlandstipendium. Supporting students who take on challenges, assume responsibility and master difficult situations is an investment in the future," says Professor Swanhild Bernstein, Vice-Rector for Education and Quality Management in Teaching at TU Bergakademie Freiberg. "Thank you to all sponsors for their continued support!"

The next application for a Deutschlandstipendium is possible in the period from .

The Deutschlandstipendium provides me with financial relief, which results in valuable free time. I invest this in my fellow human beings and society, but also in my personal and academic development. This allows me to organise events on a voluntary basis at the Student Mission Germany, use my strengths as a coach and judge in rope skipping and successfully complete my studies at the same time.

I volunteer with the fire brigade and as a lifeguard in my home town in Saxony-Anhalt. The Deutschlandstipendium scholarship helps me to continue this work, especially in terms of travelling costs. Without volunteer lifeguards, it is very difficult for the local swimming pool to keep it open and run enough swimming lessons.

Long-standing commitment from numerous scholarship donors

The scholarship programme owes its success to the numerous companies, associations, foundations and private individuals who fund half of the scholarship of 300 euros per month for up to one year. The other half comes from the federal government. Every year, an average of 74 scholarships are awarded at TUBAF, which corresponds to a total annual funding volume of around 266,000 euros. TUBAF organises the selection of scholarship holders, ensures that the scholarship is paid out and brings sponsors and young students together.

Larger proportion of sponsored students than the national average

As the announced in May, universities in Germany raised funds totalling 34 million euros from non-governmental sponsors in 2024. A total of 33,000 students nationwide received a Deutschlandstipendium. Their share of all students - measured against the provisional total number of students in the winter semester 2024/2025 - was 1.2 per cent. With 1.9 per cent of scholarship holders as a proportion of the total number of students, TUBAF is therefore above the national average.

It's worth applying

Good grades and academic performance, social and community involvement are all important for selection. Special personal family circumstances under which the applicants master their studies are also taken into account. The selected scholarship holders receive financial support of 300 euros per month for a maximum of one year and benefit from a network of committed students and donors.
