Spectators welcome: What can we expect at the handball tournament?

Handball is a high-scoring and fast-paced sport - it's definitely going to be an intense day! A total of seven mixed teams will compete against each other in the Saxon university championship. The round about 70 players on the field have mostly come together via the university sports centres of the respective universities and play handball as part of the university sports course during the semesters. They rarely come from leagues or handball clubs, but the level at the tournament can certainly reach that of a mid-level league.

We welcome participants from TU Dresden, TU Chemnitz, Leipzig University, Zwickau and Mittweida universities and TUBAF. The final will take place at around 4.30 pm, followed by an award ceremony where all teams will receive certificates and the best team will be crowned the Saxon university champion with a trophy.

This is probably the first time the tournament has been held in Freiberg. How did the championship come to be held at TUBAF?

Well, we were unable to find any records of a previous university handball championship at the university sports centre. I recently became involved in the Saxony State Conference for University Sports as the so-called discipline head for handball myself. The members coordinates all Saxon university championships and organise them together with the host universities. As I play handball myself, I had a dual interest in bringing the tournament to Freiberg.

In addition, the professional club HSG Freiberg quickly became a supporter of the state university championships at the location. The partnership between the university sports centre and the club has existed for several years: Players from the university sports centre and HSG train together in the Ernst-Grube sports hall. University Sport therefore benefits from an additional HSG sports facility and HSG benefits from higher training participation.

Last but not least: Why is handball an essential part of university sports?

Students and staff sit a lot - that's why every sport absolutely belongs at every university! University sports promotes physical, mental and social health. Handball may not be the first sports that students typically try out. But that's exactly why a handball course is a great way to try out new interests and socialise with other sports enthusiasts! Events such as the Saxon University Championships also bring students together across universities.

I'm fascinated by the speed of handball - it's a real game in attack and defence! That's why handball is really fun as a player, but also for everyone watching!
