At the United Nations World Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, the guiding principle of sustainable development was adopted in the form of Agenda 21. As a result, a large number of local, regional, national and supranational processes for the development of sustainability strategies have been planned, implemented and updated worldwide. The Federal Republic of Germany, for example, also presented a sustainability strategy in 2002 and has continued to develop it ever since. Similarly, the former Agenda 2021 was updated by the United Nations in 2015 as Agenda 2030. At its core is the catalogue of 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The implementation of the agenda in conjunction with the Paris Climate Agreement (also from 2015) offers a great opportunity to achieve a change towards sustainable and low-emission lifestyles and economies worldwide.

The TU Bergakademie Freiberg is developing a sustainability strategy based on the Sustainable Development Goals. The draft is currently being discussed by the committees at the start of the 2025 summer semester.
